AEO and listening
Answer engine optimization and developer social listening
Answer engine optimization and developer social listening overlap when AI search cites community discussions. Use citation analysis to identify relevant sources, then monitor those communities for questions, product feedback and inaccurate claims.
Takeaways
- Use answer engine optimization (AEO) measurement to find which sources describe your product. Record mentions and cited pages separately, then check technical claims against current product evidence.
- Prioritize a relevant unresolved question or documentation gap. Assign an owner and measure citations, referrals and support outcomes independently; the cited studies do not establish that a reply causes citation growth.
- 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024.[1]
- When Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one.[2]
- Ahrefs reported correlations of 0.664 for branded web mentions and 0.218 for backlink counts in its eligible brand sample.[3]
- A review of 45 generative engine optimization (GEO) studies identified topical relevance and position within the model's context as the most reproducible factors, and no tactic showed a stable cross-platform causal effect.[4]
- Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond established search engine optimization (SEO).[5]
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of making accurate information about your product show up in AI-generated answers.
Search-enabled products such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode can retrieve web sources when producing an answer. Their retrieval behavior and citation formats differ. You may also hear GEO, short for generative engine optimization. The term comes from a 2023 research paper. In its fixed-context benchmark, content changes raised measured visibility by up to 40%. That experiment did not establish an equivalent gain in organic discovery or referral traffic.[6]
Google's Search guidance says sites do not need special machine-readable files, chunked content, special schema or a special writing style for its generative features.[5] That does not make llms.txt irrelevant to other Google tools. Chrome Lighthouse includes an optional llms.txt audit for agentic browsing, separate from Search rankings and AI Overviews.[23] For the Search-specific guidance, see Does Google require special AEO or GEO optimization?.
For this guide, AEO covers crawler access, source coverage and measurement of product mentions in generated answers. These activities complement SEO; they do not replace technical documentation or community support.
Search clicks and AI citations
Several studies report lower click-through rates on search results pages that include AI Overviews. Their samples and methods differ, so compare each result within its stated population.
SparkToro's 2026 study of Similarweb panel data found 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026. In 2024 the share was 60.45%.[1] Pew tracked 900 US adults' real browsing in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked on 15%.[2] They clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.
What users did on Google results pages
Ahrefs reported in February 2026 that AI Overviews were associated with a reduction in the average click-through rate for the top-ranking page by 58%. Its sample contained 150,000 keywords with an AI Overview and 150,000 informational keywords without one. It compared aggregated desktop click-through rates for December 2023 and December 2025.[7]
Seer's 2026 update covers 53 brands. Its December 2025 informational-query table reports a difference between cited and uncited brands. With an AI Overview, organic click-through rate (CTR) was 0.95% when the brand was cited and 0.55% when it was not.[8] Queries with no AI Overview still ran far higher, at 3.97%.
Track organic clicks, citations and conversions separately. These observational studies do not establish a quarterly trend in commercial value or prove that a citation caused a click.
What is developer social listening?
Developer social listening monitors public discussions about a product, its category and competing tools so support, developer relations and product teams can respond or investigate.
It differs from broad brand monitoring in three ways. The channels are technical: GitHub, Reddit, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, YouTube, X and LinkedIn. The signals are technical: bug reports, migration threads, integration questions, comparisons. And the response is technical: a working fix, an honest limit, a doc link. For the basics, read What developer social listening is.
Stack Overflow question volume fell to 2009 levels by May 2025.[9] GitHub passed 180 million developers.[10] For the full map, read Where developers talk about your product in 2026.
Where citation analysis and community monitoring overlap
Some domains that appear frequently in AI citations also host developer discussions. Use that overlap to prioritize research and community monitoring, while keeping citation measurement separate from support outcomes.
- Community sources lead citation lists. Peec's 30 million source study ranks Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn as the three most-cited domains in AI search.[11] Profound found Reddit took 46.7% of Perplexity's top-ten source share.[12]
- Mentions have a stronger measured correlation. In Ahrefs' eligible brand sample, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664. Backlink count correlated at 0.218.[3]
- The platforms pay for community data. Reddit signed data partnerships with Google and OpenAI, as reported by Columbia Journalism Review.[13]
- Verification remains important. In Stack Overflow's survey, 46% of respondents distrusted AI accuracy.[14] The survey does not show how often an incorrect AI answer leads to a public complaint or a subsequent citation.
A proposed monitoring and content workflow
Answer a community question because the developer needs help. An indexed reply may also become a source for search, but that secondary outcome is neither automatic nor a reason to post promotional replies.
Retrieval, source selection and citation absorption
Search-based answers involve retrieval, source selection and response generation. A page can be accessible to a crawler without being retrieved or cited for a particular question.
A 2026 critical survey of 45 GEO studies describes visibility as a pipeline.[4] It runs from search activation through crawling, indexing, retrieval, reranking, citation, absorption and user behavior. Here is the simple version.
- Reach. The engine's crawler must be allowed to read your page. OpenAI and Anthropic each run separate bots for training, search and user requests.[15][16] Restricting a search crawler can reduce eligibility or visibility, depending on the provider. For request and referral measurement, read AI crawler access and referral traffic for documentation
- Retrieve. The engine searches. Google's AI features may fan one question out into many related searches across subtopics.[17] Pages that rank for those sub-queries get more chances. For how that works, read Query fan-out, explained for developer questions.
- Select. The engine picks a few sources to cite. One 2026 study reported mean citation counts of 16.35 for Perplexity, 12.06 for Google AI Overview/Gemini and 6.88 for ChatGPT. The cleaned samples contained 602 prompts for each of the first two and 587 for ChatGPT.[18]
- Absorb. The engine uses some cited pages more than others. The same study reports higher mean influence scores for pages containing code, statistics, definitions and comparisons. It does not establish that adding them causes an increase.[18]
Findings and limits of optimization research
The 2026 survey separates effects observed in controlled experiments from evidence about public search performance. Topical relevance and context position were the most reproducible factors. Generic heuristics transferred poorly between engines. Competition eroded individual gains. Rewrites aimed at citations could hurt retrieval.[4] It found no technique with a stable, longitudinal, cross-platform causal effect on organic discoverability.
Compare individual optimization claims with their scope and limitations:
| Claim you will hear | What the evidence says |
|---|---|
| "You need an llms.txt file." | Not required for Google's AI Search features. Chrome Lighthouse separately audits it as an optional site summary for AI agents; an absent file returning 404 is marked Not Applicable.[5][23] |
| "Chunk content into tiny pieces." | Google says no chunking is required and there is no ideal length.[5] |
| "Add AI schema." | Google says no special schema exists for its generative features.[5] |
| "Buy mentions." | Google says inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they seem.[5] The Ahrefs study reports correlation, not the effect of acquiring a new mention.[3] |
| "Rank for fan-out queries." | Strong correlation with citations in one study, but the fan-outs were simulated and drift between runs.[19] |
| "Add numbers, code and comparisons." | Associated with higher mean influence scores in the study's controlled prompt sample.[18] |
The six-step playbook
Use a consistent review schedule and record changes so repeated measurements remain comparable. The steps below are a working process, not a tested optimization formula.
1. Audit crawler access
Check robots.txt, your content delivery network (CDN) and firewall for each engine's search and user bots. Cloudflare introduced Disallow AI Training on September 15, 2026, with different recommendations for ad-supported and other new domains.[20] Check your domain's actual Search, Training and Agent settings; blocking a mixed-use crawler can also restrict search.
2. Measure the answers
Write 50 to 200 prompts your buyers ask: best-for, versus, how-to and problem prompts. Run them across engines on a schedule. Record whether you are named, which pages are cited and whether the answer is accurate. Use Search Console's generative AI report for Google's side. Read How to measure Google AI Search visibility in Search Console.
3. Identify cited domains
List the domains cited for your prompts. That list identifies the sources observed in your prompt sample. For how to build it and what the public research shows, read Sources cited in AI answers about developer tools.
4. Monitor relevant communities
Track your product, competitors and error strings on the cited channels. Sort posts into questions, friction, buying signals, praise and muted. The friction and the wrong-answer complaints show where engines misdescribe you.
5. Add evidence in two places
On your own site, fix the pages engines cite or should cite. Lead each section with the answer. Add tested code, real numbers, clear definitions and honest comparisons. In the community, answer real threads with working fixes and a clear disclosure. Read Replying to developers: community rules and disclosure before you post.
6. Measure again
Rerun the prompts. Compare mentions, citations and accuracy against last month. Record changes in the prompt set, model and source coverage before attributing a difference to your edits.
Metrics and their denominators
Report citation coverage, answer accuracy and referral outcomes as separate measures. None substitutes for the others.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Share of answers naming you | Presence in the decision | Prompt runs across engines |
| Citation share by domain | Domains cited in the sample | Prompt runs |
| Answer accuracy rate | Whether engines describe you correctly | Prompt runs checked against your docs |
| AI feature impressions | Google's side of AI visibility | Search Console |
| Crawl-to-referral ratio per provider | Crawl requests per attributable page request | Server logs and analytics |
| Community mentions by track | Volume and type of conversation | Listening tool |
| Reply acceptance | Whether your answers helped | Thread outcomes |
Google's Generative AI performance report currently documents impressions, with page, country, date and device dimensions. Do not label those impressions as clicks, or treat the report as a log of generated fan-out queries.[22]

FAQ
Is AEO different from SEO?
For Google, its own guidance says no special optimization is required beyond normal SEO. Other engines have their own crawlers and retrieval, so AEO adds measurement across engines and attention to the sources those engines cite.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
Both are industry labels for visibility in AI-generated answers. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper on generative engines. AEO is another industry label. Define the metrics in use rather than relying on either label alone.
Does llms.txt help with AI search?
Google Search does not require llms.txt for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google's guidance does not establish it as a ranking benefit.[5] Chrome Lighthouse separately includes an llms.txt audit for agentic browsing. It describes the file as an emerging convention for giving large language models (LLMs) and AI agents a concise site summary and key links. The audit flags server errors when retrieving the file; a missing file returning 404 is Not Applicable because it is optional.[23] Maintain it for agent-readable navigation, not as a promise of better Search rankings or citations.
Why does social listening matter for AI search?
Answer engines cite community sources such as Reddit and YouTube heavily, and brand mentions correlate strongly with AI Overview visibility. The conversations you listen to are part of the evidence engines use.
